I don't know about you, but I see a lot of glutton in America!! I can't imagine that I, or we, will have what our parents generation had. Just look at them driving across country in those gawd awful enormous, gas guzzling motor homes with a vehicle in-tow. Call me crazy, but I think it's too much!! I know they worked hard and now it's their time to enjoy the good life. But I also see the flip side of their gluttonous life. Many of those couch-potato, RV people are in real bad health and end up in the hospital with coronary artery disease and are on the fast track to a heart attack. And it's my back that's taking a beating!!! America needs to get off their ass, quit watching television and get back to a life of exercise, growing a garden and doing meaningful things. I absolutely am appalled at what is on TV today - DISGUSTING!!!! With the exception of a very few good educational channels, it's all TRASH!!! What happened to hiking, sleeping under the stars and climbing a big peak? We have so much in this country - it's almost unfathomable. I am grateful for living in a country with so much, however, I find myself choosing to live a more simple life. I don't want a huge house; I don't want a gas guzzling vehicle; I don't want a television; I don't want a motorboat, ATV or snowmobile and I don't want to buy the majority of food on today's market, which is controlled by a mere three food corporations. I don't want credit card debt; I don't want a bunch of kids; I don't want to work for corporate America!! I do want to build my little house with my own two hands; I do want to grow my own food; I don't want to work my life away. I swear, our system has it so our generation will work until we die and it's almost a given we will NOT see social security and it's almost a given we will not have the retirement our parents had. With all that said, I must say, overall I am grateful for being blessed with a really good life and have so much to be thankful for. I have found a way to make a decent life for myself without working all the time like most of my fellow Americans. Now I just have to figure out how to get a good, piece of land for cheap and build my little straw bale house and go as green as possible!!!
America- home of the obese, over medicated, over advertized, under exercized, under educated and the lacking of free will. But as far as retires climbing into an 5th wheel or RV- more power to them (mostly). My folks and most of their friends I have met are so much more active and consious of what they have and what they spend compared to the retired folks who move into a retirement community (rented tomb above ground). Of course I have only my parents to base my opinion on, but hell I think they have a great thing going on.
T.V. the best frontal labotomy ever created.I say let the fat bastards have their trash tv- the best way to conserve is to cull the masses. Since I was just black mailed by Comcast to either upgrade for a small amount or get raped for the same services- I conceaded and to my surprise found a channel- remember Bill Nye "the Science Guy" he has a program on Green TV called Stuff Happens- it is worth the 30 min of advertizing you have to sit through.
Tell me though when building Green why do we have to pay so much more for it. I understand paying extra for new technology but some of the pricing and return of investment and/ or actual environmental savings are dishearting. With any large changes still having corp. america making the profit.
Retirement? I'm sorry I looked up the word and could not find a definition.
So all know I am as big a hipocrite as the next- Go Broncos
Alright, alright, so these retirees are out and about seeing the country from a 5th wheel and not sitting home watching T.V. But why do the motor homes/5th wheel have to be so big? What happened to simplicity? Last summer when I was on my bike tour I met two married couples doing a camp host position at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. One married couple had the enormous motor home equipped with satellite TV, shower, bath tub, slide-out dining and much more. The other couple had a small economical camper van, which had a pop-top - call me crazy, but I'd choose the smaller van with the pop-top! It would be much more economical, it would be easier to drive and not take up the whole damn blasted highway and if I'm traveling around in a camper van, I don't want to be in my camper - I want to be out exploring, hiking, biking, museums, not hanging out in my RV watching satellite television. We are truly a land of abundance and wealth!
Going Green does not have to be expensive. I have two good friends who bought a 160 acres for cheap. Now they are building their dream house. It is not a totally green house by any means, but they will have hydro-panels to supply heat for their in-floor heating, solar/wind for running their appliances, a wood stove for heating purposes and lots of south facing windows. They got a lot of their building materials from contractors on big jobs in Telluride, so it is wood that otherwise would be wasted. They scored very good, energy efficient windows from another builder and were also lucky enough to get huge water storage tanks to place underground - this water will be to shower/cook with. They are super thrifty and creative. Anyone can find ways of going green for cheap if they don't require new, high dollar materials. It's just a matter of shopping around for alternative means and reusing/reducing.
GO BRONCOS!!! It's a beautiful day in the desert - 73 degrees and sunny!
Jay, after thinking about your comments regarding your parents climbing into their 5th wheel -
There are more important things I should be ranting about. I'm taking a positive psychology class right now and am learning to focus on the positive, such as what people are doing right. Your parents are doing something right by touring in their 5th wheel. You are absolutely right - it's better than moving into the retirement community. But, with that said, I have a good childhood friend who has parents that were able to retire in their mid 50's. They actually moved to a retirement community in Florida, as if they were old. I was so baffled. However, I visited them at their rented tomb above ground and saw firsthand how they enjoyed playing shuffleboard with people 20 years older. Each to their own and my lesson here is not to be so judgmental.
I am a registered nurse who has big plans to work as a traveling nurse by bike. This way, I will see the world, get lots of exercise and use my skills as a nurse in various countries around the world.
